“Marco”………”Polo”

Another calm day getting to the island of Korcula.  We decided to lay anchor in Uvala Luka, a bay just Southeast of the town by the same name.  It was very popular and crowded.  The seas were getting a bit choppy and the Captain decided that a six person ride in those seas around the point was very questionable so we hired a Water Taxi at 30 Kunas per person for a roundtrip ride (about $5 USD)…a much safer alternative.

After fending off a few boats from anchoring TOO CLOSE for comfort, we headed in.  We arrived and wandered around for a bit just soaking up the atmosphere of this walled city.  There are many souvenir shops dedicated to Marco Polo who was born in the town of Korcula.  He is the famous explorer who travelled to China in the 13th century.  He loved it so much, he stayed for 17 years before returning.  We finally settled in for a wonderful sea-view restaurant for dinner.  We got a Seafood Platter and a Meat Platter (both had plenty to share between two persons).  The seafood platter included: squid, octopus, mackerel, dorado, prawns and sea trout…a feast for sure.

Because we were running short on water, the Captain had turned on the water maker to re-fill the tanks.  About 1:00 AM we got a pounding on our door from Nate who informed us of a “situation” outside with another boat.  We had not heard anything due to the noise from the water maker.  We jumped up on deck to another boat right on the stern.  They were wanting to know what they should do.  Finally they pulled up their anchor which was now below Jay Sea Dee as we fended them off of us.  The winds had shifted, causing the overcrowded anchorage to change its puzzle. There were a few spotlights on around the chaos (not just by us but everywhere) and boats having to pull up anchor to find a new SPOT or just leave.  Needless to say, a sleepless night was had by the Captain and Admiral.
