Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Arrived in Boothbay on Wednesday afternoon after sailing from Pulpit Harbor, North Haven Island. During the last week we had discovered some water in a small compartment under the cabin sole next to our berth in the aft stateroom. At first we were not sure where the water was coming from, if it was fresh or saltwater, or if it was soapy water from the shower drain. But after 8 hours on a starboard tack all day on Tuesday, it became readily apparent that the water was saltwater and it was coming through one of the through-hull fittings on the port side of the boat....not good!

We called ahead to the Island Packet dealer in Boothbay: Norm Pierce, and asked if he would take a look at the problem and also if he had a spare mooring we could get for the night. he did not have a mooring, but recommended a couple of marinas that did have rental moorings. We were directed to a mooring that turned out to be the last one on the harbor, all the way out at the end, and right along the main fairway where all of the harbor traffic comes and goes. After 15 minutes I decided to look for something closer in, I called several places and found a tie-up at a floating dock at the Rocktide Inn..and it was FREE, well almost, we had to agree to dine at their restaurant where they were advertising a twin lobster dinner for $22....wow!

Norm Pierce form Island Packet did come aboard. We concluded the water was coming from a through hull fitting above the water line ( Shower drain). The fitting will have to be removed and resealed, but until we haul the boat, a bead of caulk will have to do.
After settling in, we went ashore to make reservations for dinner...they only take reservations for the formal dining room, and gentlemen must wear a coat...we initially decided to pass on that, but later when we returned to the boat, I reconsidered and put on a jacket. Well, they we were, Jay Sea Dee right smack dab in front of the water front restaurant. You could feel the many eyes gazing upon us as we climbed off the yacht, all gussied up, and strutted to the restaurant. I knew damn well I didn't have a reservation for the formal dining room that night, but I pretended to when we checked in with the hostess. "Dinsmoor party of 2 for 7:30". She was almost blushing as if she or her staff had made some mistake in taking our reservation and was quick to apologize for any delay..our table overlooking the harbor would be ready soon.

The Rocktide restaurant seemed very elegant, with many classic ships models inside glass cases. We were shown to our table and looked around at the other guests. Jodi leaned over and said we were 20 years younger than anyone else in here, I told her :" In the game of "Life" we were 20 spaces ahead of the rest!!. One white lie led to another and we told our waitress that it was our anniversary, could she please take our picture!!!

Freeport, Maine

We arrived in South Freeport Maine on Friday after a 3 hour sail from Five Islands along the Sheepscott River. As we were motoring our way up Broad Sound, we were surrounded by hundreds of lobster traps. We flagged down one of the many lobster boats tending thier traps and bought 4 nice big lobsters for $20. It was really cool, we put the $20 in our telescoping fishing net, reached over to the lobster boat, made the exchange, and pulled in our dinner...really cool!!

We made it to South Freeport and tied up at the Brewer docks. This is a nice arrangement for us because we get 6 free nights at other Brewer yards around New England. At dock we can hook up to 50 amp power, lots of water, and free WiFi.

Off to the LL Bean store in Freeport via the Brewer courtesy van. The LL Bean store is now many buildings, and there is a large number of other outlet stores that have sprung up around the LL bean location. This is a shopping mecca. We filled my Dad's order for more LL Bean sweaters: 100% lambs wool, crew neck, got 2 at the discount outlet and 3 more at the retail store. We also picked up some high tech base layer clothing ( used to be called : long underwear) at the North Face and Patagonia outlet stores.
We will take advantage of the dockage and give the the boat a good wash down and cleaning, then we are off to Portland for a couple of days.
