The Capital of Corsica…Ajaccio

One of our big city “splurges” was to be Ajaccio.  There are two marinas there and as soon as you pull into the gulf, the huge cruise ships catch your eye.  So we decided to go to the one furthest from there called “Port Charles Ornano”.  We pulled in and didn’t see an arrival dock or any empty spaces.  We tried reaching them but got no answer so we called “Vieux Port” and got a berth there.  It was nice to wash the salt off of the boat and fill the water tanks.  Other than that it wasn’t a very welcoming.  A big power boat coming into the berth next to us hit us but did not damage Jay Sea Dee, only their own boat.

Other than being the Capital of Corsica, Ajaccio’s claim to fame is that Napoleon was born there in 1769.  Napoleon left Corsica when he was nine and returned only once on his way to Egypt in 1799.  They still named the main thoroughfare after him as well as many other locations.  There are some beautiful statues in town such as photo #1, Napoleon as a Roman Consul, Photo #2 is a statue of Napoleon with his four brothers, photo #3 is the Place de Gaulle which is a gorgeous public park.

Below is the main Cathedral where Napoleon was baptized at age two.  Also a photo of the beach front.  We only stayed one night as the thrashing was horrible from all the boat traffic.
