The entrance into Bonifacio will just take your breath away. You feel as if you’ve stepped into another era altogether. Bonifacio is perched on a limestone plateau, enclosed by fortified walls on the Southern tip of Corsica. The sea has washed away pieces of the stone, leaving huge caves.
We climbed up to the Citadel which was built by Count Bonifacio in 828. You enter the walls through the moat gate and huge drawbridge doors and zigzag your way through town and under buttresses, a very renaissance feeling.
On the seaward side of the citadel is a sailors cemetery that I found really intriguing to walk through. Each little unit is a “Family” resting place…some going back centuries. What a place to rest forever!
We found a candy shop to die for…check it out!
It was July 4th and one of the local bars, the B-52’s, was celebrating Independence Day by hanging up Red-White-and Blue decorations and asking the customers to dress as an American Celebrity. We saw a Superman, a Superbowl Player, and lots and lots of Cowboys and Indians. Oh yeah, and they played old American disco tunes till the wee hours of the morning…Happy 4th of July!!!
I had a great birthday dinner as well…even a firework thrown in:
