Portofino…Land of the Rich and Famous

IMG_1275We just couldn’t go without staying in Portofino.  John made reservations months ago for two nights.  During the call to confirm the reservation we were told it would be Bow-To and an extra long stern line.  The marina employee comes out and grabs your line and threads it through a huge buoy then passes it back to you to tie up on the other side of the stern.  Another employee helps with the bow lines and you have to pull up VERY VERY close to the concrete wall if you want any chance of getting off your boat.  We have no passarelle other than our fender board so John (being the engineer he is) rigs us up a plank to walk a shore.  But we are rocking and rolling pretty good in this little marina with all the traffic coming in and out and then a huge 250 foot ship pulled up nearby right at sundown and blocked our whole view of town.  So we decided a one night stay at 192 Euro per night was plenty rich and famous for us.  IMG_1259IMG_1256

This morning we walked the town full of Hermes, Prada, Gucci stores and then walked up to the Castle Brown…what a view.  The famous who have made this one of their homes include Greta Garbo, Rex Harrison (dropped his Oscar into the bay but it was recovered), Truman Capote, and Liz Taylor.    IMG_1261  It is a beautiful town surrounded by a Marine Park.  One of the gems in the park is a statue of Christ deep in the sea below where scuba divers can visit.  I think that would be an awesome sight to behold!  Too bad I don’t scuba.
