When Pigs Fly…or Swim

We had anchored at Big Majors so we could get an early start on activities.  The morning started with the Swimming Pigs…yes, they really swim.  They come to visit you on your dinghy and try to climb in if you are not careful.  I think too many people have provided free food.

After the pigs we dinghied over to Thunderball Grotto.  It is a cave that you can snorkel into.  It was part of the James Bond movie by the same name , “Never Say Never Again” and the movie “Splash”.  The fish at the entrance were abundant and beautiful.  There is a beautiful “Antler” coral head (looks like a huge elk antler rack but yellow) at the entrance…see the yellow in the water in the last photo.  It was a bit crowded so we didn’t stay too long.

Next, onto the sunken airplane.  The water was so clear I took a photo of Jonathon diving near it.

Finally, to the Sea Aquarium.  This is part of the Exuma Marine Park and is the BEST snorkeling in the whole world.  I saw such a variety of fish.  The Queen Angel Fish (photo #1)is by far the most beautiful to watch as the yellow and blue are so vibrant under the sea.  We also saw a Lion Fish (last photo) which have moved into the Bahamas more recently.  They are a predator and eat many fish.  They have a poison in their spikes and can attack if provoked…we kept our distance.  The Sergent Majors (photo #2) come to greet you by the Hundreds.  People keep feeding them and they swarm you underwater which can be fun or evasive depending on how you look at it…it made me laugh.  The parrotfish is another beautiful species (photo #3). It looks like he is smiling at you as he is headed your direction and he has buck teeth …haha.   I am just giving you photos of a few of the fish we saw…so many others were there as well.
