Bioluminescence

We spent our last night in Puerto Rico at the Southwest corner of the Island in Bahia De Boqueron.  The seas were calm, the wind light, and it was a sauna but one with a great view.  Puerto Rico has surprised us with its beautiful yet un-crowded anchorages.  Coming into Boqueron we passed by Cabo Rojo which translates to Cape Red because of the strong trade winds here that leave you “red in the face”.  We didn’t have that problem today…no winds.

The 4am call to “raise the crew” was shocking.  We are doing our first over-nighter since arriving in the Caribbean.  We are off to The Dominican Republic…a 250 mile trip to Puerto Plata on the North shore.  Raising the anchor is usually “just another chore” but this morning it was pitch black and a joy.  Why?  Because of the Bioluminescence.  I had seen many a Tours advertised for this phenomenon and have experienced it on a low key level in the dinghy but this was different.  As it would hit the anchor chain there were green glow balls all over the water.  It was like someone had dumped a whole box of green Glow Sticks in the water…what a sight!
