Bays of Beauty

Leaving Red Hook we made the 4 mile jaunt to Cinnamon Bay on St. John.  Because most of St. John is a National Park, established in 1956, there are mooring balls to use instead of anchoring which destroys the coral.  The price for using them is $15 per night.  The Park has set up “payment” boxes where you fill out an envelope with your payment and drop it into a drop box which is located on a floating pontoon.

Our first night we spent at Cinnamon Bay, one of my all time favorite places in the world.  The water is crystal clear and the beach is usually not crowded.  The boys and I swam over to the “Underwater Snorkel Trail” that the Park has set up.  There are signs at the bottom of the Bay marking fish and corals that you see as you snorkel.

The next day we moved on over to Francis Bay.  More snorkeling was done around Whistling Cay Island.  The next morning we went ashore and hiked to Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins via the Francis Bay Trail.  Along the way we saw deer, wild donkeys, and lizards.  The cauldron where they mixed the syrup into sugar was still inside the mill…cool!

After lunch we headed to Watermelon Bay.  This evening the guys donned their wet suits and headed out for a night snorkel trip in search of some lobster.  After seeing more huge Tarpin in the water (they are attracted to light) and a trip in the dark to the dinghy tie-up the decision was to “bag it” and back they came…smart decision!
