Stari Grad on Hvar

Our 2:30 arrival at the town wall gave us plenty of berthing space.  There is a brand new wall to berth at right on the walkway to/from town…good people watching spot for sure.  Quay lines are available along with electricity and water.  Apparently, if the sirocco (NW/W winds) is blowing, the harbor can be a very dangerous place to be.  The sea level can rise/fall about 1 meter creating flooding onshore.  This was one of the most expensive town walls we’ve ever stayed at.  It cost 660 Kuna (about $130 USD).

We wandered around the alley’s and just took in all the sights and sounds.

This evening we spiffied up and headed out to dinner.  A local guy had stopped by the boat and tell us about his restaurant for dinner.  We wandered through more alleys and found the restaurant but I had spotted another place along the way that just felt right so we switched course and headed back.  We sat under a lime tree and I had the best Beef Steak I’ve EVER had here in Europe. It was marinated in balsamic and had a creamy sauce with dried figs in it…to die for!!!  The name of the restaurant was Tavern Dardin,  All of our food was cooked over a wood-fired grill and it was run by the local Dardin family who prepared everything by hand.

They also had lobster on the menu which I originally ordered but they only had a 3 kg lobster available…that would be 6.6 pounds which was a bit pricey for us at $100 USD per pound…hence the Beef steak.

What a beautiful evening it was as there was some festival going on and we enjoyed the sounds of a 12 person men’s accapella singing group and walked by many souvenir and food tents cooking up grilled sardines, fried donuts, etc…too bad we ate already.

There was a tent selling white-rock carved items.  I stopped to ask about the stones and was told it was called “common stone” from the Island of Brac here in Croatia.  This was the stone used to build the White House!
