“Godzilla” in the Harbor…looks like quite the ride
We wanted to see a few sites today as our list is ginormous. So off we headed to the USS Constitution. It is free to see the ship but the museum requests a donation of $5 per person. The ship was launched in 1797 and is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat today. She has NEVER lost a battle, and when the British cannon balls started bouncing off her sides they gave her the nick name “Old Ironsides”. She was NEVER made of iron, only Georgia oak.
Moving on we stopped at the Monument of Bunker Hill which was dedicated in 1843 to commemorate the battle in June of 1775. The Americans lost the Battle but destroyed almost half of the British troops which was a real victory as most of the American troops were untrained villagers. The statue is of General Joseph Warren who was a prime figure in the Revolution but met an untimely death in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Last stop was Warren’s Tavern, established in 1780 and is considered the oldest building in town and the oldest Tavern in Massachusetts. Paul Revere frequented the Tavern. George Washington gave a speech here and Benjamin Franklin even visited. It is pretty cool to think you may be standing where those great men of history once stood
Here is Jay Sea Dee tied up at Constitution Marina!
